Director - Rob Goring
Rob Goring has been directing bands in Alberta for the past thirty-three years, first as a school band teacher and later as a community band director. Bands under his direction have achieved Gold Medals in Canada's national concert band festival. Rob was the founding director of the Red Deer All-City Band, a community youth band who were repeat national Gold Medalists and national champions. Rob directed the Red Deer Community Band Society's flagship community adult band from 1991 until 2001, leading them to repeat Gold Medals in regional concert band festivals and increasing the band’s size from 15 to 50 members.  Rob became Director of Bands for the Red Deer Community Band Society and Director of the Red Deer Royals in May 2001. He and his staff led the group to a First Prize at the WAMSB World Championships in Potsdam, Germany in July 2001. Two years later he led the Royals to a Gold overall score in at the WAMSB World Championships in Monza, Italy.  The Royals have also received many awards and prizes here at home, including being selected in 2008 as Musical Grand Champion at both the Calgary Stempede parade and Edmonton’s Capital Ex parade. Rob has been a teacher, a middle school principal, a college instructor in the teacher training department at Red Deer College and is presently (about to retire as) a principal with the Red Deer Public School District. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Music Education and a Master's degree in School Administration from the University of Alberta. In 2005 Rob was a recipient of the provincial government’s Alberta Centennial Medal for “outstanding service to the people and province of Alberta”.  In 2007 he was invited into the international bandmasters’ faternity Phi Beta Mu.

Visual Director-Wade Lamb

Wade Lamb, a native Calgarian, holds a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Calgary. Wade has been extensively involved with pageantry since 1984 when he first played trumpet in the Calgary Round Up Band. Later he continued to the Stampede Show Band until he aged out in 1990. Wade joined the instructional staff of the Calgary Roundup Band in 1990 and was Artistic Director from 1995 until 1999. Under his direction the band was recognized as a world leader in pageantry at the junior level, receiving 1st prize and best junior band at the Championships of the World Association of Marching Show Bands in Sydney, Australia in 1999.

Wade was a founding member and Assistant Director of "A Band of Outriders", an alumni band of the Stampede Show Band 1991-1996. Other pageantry organizations that Wade has instructed with are The Calgary Stetson Show Band, Central Memorial High School Marching Band, and The Stampede Show Band.

Currently Wade is the Visual Director of the Red Deer Royals Show Band, Southern Alberta representative on the Canadian Winter Guard Association and is an active clinician, adjudicator, visual & GE judge and trumpet player in Calgary and surrounding area. He also teaches math at Rundle College in Calgary.

Wade was instrumental in designing the new marching uniforms.

As well, he created the logo at the top right hand side of this page. It looks like our new uniforms.

Percussion Lead Instructor - Michael Mann

Michael holds a Bachelor's degree in Music from the University of Calgary where he studied secondary music education and percussion.  Since his graduation in 1995, Michael has taught band and K-12 general music at River Glen School in Red Deer.  From 1996 - 99, Michael served as a percussion instructor with the Red Deer College Conservatory of Music. 

Michael also has experience with the Calgary Stetson Show Band (drumline instructor), Penhold Air Cadet Camp (band instructor), and the Red Deer Royals (associate director). Along with his teaching duties, Michael is active as a clinician and guest conductor.  He has performed with the Calgary Civic Orchestra and the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra, and the Alberta Winds professional wind ensemble. 

Michael is married to Jennifer Mann and they have two boys, Zachary and Aaron.

Color Guard Lead Instructor -Trudy Hockley:

A native of Calgary and an accomplished champion baton twirler, Trudy has spent most of her life involved with pageantry. Trudy became a colour guard member of the Calgary Safety Roundup Band in 1978, and she continued marching and twirling right through her age out year with the Calgary Stampede Show Band in 1989.
Trudy returns to the Red Deer Royals as a colour guard instructor following a few years with the Calgary Stetson Show Band. Welcome back Trudy!

Color Guard Instructor -Caity Grant :

We are excited to have Caity back in the Red Deer Royals family in a different capacity. Caity was a colourguard member, RED Winterguard member and Section Leader for our Colourguard. She marched with the Calgary Stampede Show Band and currently is a student at the University of Calgary.

Color Guard Instructor - Megan Mackenzie

Megan joined the colour guard staff in 2010 after performing for many years with the Calgary Stampede Showband. 

When not taking part in Dance or Colour Guard, Megan attends the University of Calgary and is on her way to becoming a Paramedic.

Drill Instructor - Jayson Erickson:

Jayson is a former Red Deer Royal. He was a member of the Royals for 5 years, two of which he was drum major with Chris Beck. This is his third year as staff. Jayson was also a member of the RED Winter Drumline for three years.

Jayson is attending the Music and Education program at University of Alberta as a Saxophone major.s is

Drill Instructor -Calista Lonsdale:

Calista was a member of the Royals for several years and was a Drum Major. She returns to help the band as a Drill Instructor. Welcome back, Calista!

Percussion Instructor- Paul Pangle:

Paul is a former member of the Red Deer Royals in the Percussion section and as a Section Leader.He also was a member of the RED Winter Drumline.

Paul has graduated from the Music Programme at Grant MacEwen College in Edmonton and will be continuing his musical studies at the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts in England. We will miss you Paul.

Percussion Instructor: Andrew Ball:

Andrew joined the Royals staff this year. He is a percussionist studying at the University of Calgary. As well, Andrew has spent years in the Calgary Stampede Show Band. Andrew marched with the Cavaliers, a prestigious DCI band from Chicago. Way to go Andrew!
